U.S. Trooper Saber — The Blade of the American Horse Soldier

The U.S. Trooper Saber is the unmistakable silhouette of the American cavalryman: long, curved, and built for the thunder of a charge. Its lineage reaches back to the Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, the weapon carried by Union horsemen during the Civil War and later refined for ceremonial use by U.S. Army troopers.

Blade

A sweeping, gently curved steel blade — typically around 35 inches — designed for slashing from horseback. Its profile balances reach with agility, allowing a trooper to strike while maintaining control at full gallop.

Guard & Hilt

The guard is the saber’s signature:

  • A three‑branch brass or gilt guard, flowing in elegant arcs to protect the hand.
  • A grip wrapped in leather bound with twisted brass wire for secure handling.
    • The pommel often bears a subtle capstan or stepped design, echoing 19th‑century military aesthetics.

    Scabbard

Usually steel or blackened metal, fitted with suspension rings for saddle carry. Later ceremonial versions use polished black leather with brass mounts, giving the weapon a dress‑uniform dignity.
