It was indeed an extremely effective cutting sabre, so much so that the Prussians adopted it near the end of the Napoleonic wars

Early Knights Pythias Fraternal Sword

Classic Early Knights of Pythias K of P Lodge Sword made about 1890’s. Blade is maker marked under the counter guard and it is not possible to read the entire inscription. What is legible is “The / M.C. Lilley …. / Columbus…”. The complete marking probably reads “The M.C. Lilley & Co. / Columbus, Ohio”, which was used from 1882. Blade measures 28″ and the overall length is 35 1/2″. The brass hilt is very heavily silver-plated and has developed an extremely rich patina. The leather grip covering shows loss to the high spots, while thick brass wire bound is still tightly in place.. The blade is well preserved and polished. The blade etching simply consists of the name “T H Kelsey”. The sword is complete with scabbard and original chain hand guard this sword displays very well. The rich patina on the hilt and blade provide a super visual effect
